Description

Waiting for Things We Want is a research-based GrowTogether Flipbook that teaches kids (ages 4-7) patience skills in just 5 to 10 minutes a day.

What does Waiting for Things We Want help with?

Your child will benefit from this Flipbook if you've ever noticed them showing signs of impatience, like:

  • Interrupting you mid-sentence because they want something right now and can't wait
  • Having a meltdown in the grocery store because you said "no" to buying something
  • Constantly asking "Are we there yet?" on a car ride
  • Struggling to sit still and wait for something — their food at a restaurant, or to be called at the doctor's office

Waiting for Things We Want helps kids learn to wait patiently and delay gratification. Delaying gratification is a key life skill that's linked to better life outcomes — like higher educational achievement, higher income, healthier relationships, and healthier lifestyles.

How does it work?

Waiting for Things We Want is set up like a comic book, so your child will be excited to sit down with you and do the activities!

You'll set aside 5-10 minutes a day (for 2 weeks, or longer if you skip a day here and there) to sit down with your child and go through 3 pages together.

You'll read aloud the dialogue and discussion question(s) to your child. The pages present real-life situations like waiting in line at an amusement park, or waiting for food to arrive.

As you go through the book, your child will learn simple strategies for coping with impatience. They'll become more aware of their emotions and how those emotions feel in their body.

Each short activity is followed by a note just for parents, so you get context on what your child is learning, why that matters, and how to extend practice into your daily family life.

It's personal growth for kids, made fun!

Why parents love it:

  • No prep or planning is required on your part. Just sit down and go through 3 pages of activities a day!
  • It's quick. 5 to 10 minutes is all it takes. The Flipbook stands up on its own, so you can set it down on the table and easily make it a part of your dinner or breakfast routine.
  • It's actually fun for kids. The comic-book format keeps kids engaged and coming back for more.
  • It creates screen-free quality time. No devices needed; this book allows you to connect with your child and have meaningful conversations.

Who is this for?

  • Families with kids ages 4-7
  • Busy parents who want results without a big time commitment
  • Parents looking to strengthen their relationship with their child

If you've ever felt like you're walking on eggshells because you can't give your child what they want right away, it's time to leave that feeling behind. And you can say goodbye to the embarrassment of your child having a meltdown in public!

In this day and age, being able to do something as a family that requires zero screens is a breath of fresh air. The illustrations are gorgeous, and the comic-book style images and layout makes it easy to just sit down and go, with no prep and no setup. My six-year-old is learning real skills from it: patience, noticing what his emotions feel like in his body, and what to do when he can’t have something right away. A bonus for us has been that the pages are simple enough that he can read 80 to 90% of them himself and do the activities alongside me, so he’s getting reading practice too. What has surprised me most is that it doesn’t stay at the kitchen table. We’re having these conversations out in public now. When we’re stuck in line at the store, or waiting on food at a restaurant, and he’s starting to lose it, I can bring up the story we read and he remembers it. He’ll tell me what he’s feeling and try one of the strategies right there in the moment. If you want something you can do together as a family that also teaches your child a skill they’ll carry into adulthood, this book is the total package. I can’t recommend it enough.

This was such a great conversation starter for dinner talks with my daughters! They range in age from 3-10 and all struggle with waiting for different things, so it was nice to have something that spoke to all of them at once. This book really helped them communicate how they were feeling and come up with strategies to help manage those feelings. Even my 3 year old could follow along and point to the parts that felt familiar to her, while my older girls were able to dig deeper into naming their emotions and talking through what actually helps them when they're frustrated with waiting
